Passenger or Conductor
The same train. Two different positions of awareness.
You can be sitting in exactly the same train, living exactly the same life, and steer from two very different positions.
The difference is not whether you think.
The difference is where you receive your information from before you choose.
A passenger largely experiences life through what the mind has made out of what happened.
A conductor learns to receive what is actually here before letting the mind explain it.
Neither is a permanent identity.
You move between them.
Again and again.
Experience happens before the mind explains it
Before the mind says what something is, something has already been experienced.
Close your eyes while a flock of geese passes overhead.
Before the words:
geese are flying over
there is sound.
Changing pitch.
Rhythm.
Distance.
Sound moving through space.
Step outside on a September morning.
Before:
the sun is shining
there is warmth on your skin.
Before:
the wind is blowing
there is something brushing across your face and legs.
Before:
autumn is coming
there is a particular smell entering through your nose.
Your body may recognize that smell immediately.
Then the mind translates the information:
autumn.
Nothing is wrong with that translation.
Language is useful.
But the word autumn is not the smell.
The word wind is not the sensation brushing your skin.
The word sun is not the warmth on your cheek.
The word goose is not the sound moving across the sky.
The experience came first.
The description came afterward.
Making something out of something
The mind receives experience and makes something out of it.
It names.
It categorizes.
It remembers.
It associates.
It compares.
It interprets.
It gives meaning.
It predicts what might happen next.
And it does this incredibly quickly.
You look across a field.
Before language there is colour, movement, shape, distance and light.
Then:
sheep.
Useful.
But from there the mind can immediately travel:
sheep → farm → wool → countryside → childhood → memory → opinion → meaning.
A living experience has become a mental representation.
Again, there is nothing wrong with that.
The problem begins when the mind forgets that the translation happened.
Direct experience happens before the mind explains it.
Making something out of something happens when the mind turns experience into a mental representation — and then forgets that it did so.
When wallpaper looks like the wall
Imagine that every wall you have ever seen has been covered in wallpaper.
Eventually you no longer see wallpaper.
You simply think:
that is the wall.
The same thing happens with interpretations, identities, rules and conclusions.
Someone has not replied to your message.
What is directly here:
There is no reply on the screen yet.
The mind may add:
She is ignoring me.
Then:
She does not care about me.
And perhaps:
I must have done something wrong.
Within seconds, you may begin reacting to something that the mind created out of what actually happened.
The same can happen with deeply familiar rules:
I must never disappoint somebody.
If money leaves the account, I am unsafe.
If I feel afraid, something must be wrong.
If I said yes, I am not allowed to change my mind.
When these have been present long enough, they no longer feel like interpretations.
They feel like facts.
That is wallpaper.
The passenger
The passenger is not stupid, weak or unconscious.
Passenger is simply a position in which awareness has become absorbed in the description, interpretation or scenery.
Something happens.
The mind makes something out of it.
And the train begins responding to what the mind made.
The passenger may follow:
a thought,
a fear,
a memory,
another person’s reaction,
an attractive possibility,
an obligation,
an identity,
a raven flying overhead. 😂
And before you notice, you are somewhere else.
The scenery has begun steering the train.
The conductor
The conductor learns to receive before translating.
Sound before geese.
Warmth before sun.
Tightness before something is wrong.
An empty message screen before she does not care.
The conductor does not throw away thought.
She needs thought.
She needs language.
She needs memory, planning, comparison and reasoning.
But she learns to use those mental tools without losing contact with the experience they are describing.
The passenger mistakes the description of reality for reality itself.
The conductor can use the description without losing contact with the experience.
That small difference changes the position from which a choice is made.
The conductor reads the instrument
The body is part of the information available now.
You may notice:
warmth,
tightness,
pressure,
tiredness,
restlessness,
aliveness,
relaxation,
resistance,
ease.
The conductor learns to receive these signals too.
But a signal is not automatically an instruction.
Fear does not necessarily mean:
turn around.
Excitement does not necessarily mean:
go there.
Tension does not automatically mean:
something is wrong.
A signal is information.
The conductor receives it before deciding what to make of it.
The conductor does not need a better story.
The conductor needs the signal.
The scenery does not have to steer the train
Life keeps appearing.
People walk past.
Messages arrive.
Children need something.
Ideas appear.
Birds fly overhead.
Your own mind produces twenty fascinating possibilities before breakfast. 😂
None of that needs to disappear.
The question is whether awareness is still present while the train changes direction.
Sometimes you suddenly notice:
Wait. What am I doing? I was doing something else.
That moment matters.
It means you are back.
There I went.
There I am.
You do not need to prevent yourself from ever wandering.
You need to become able to recognize that you wandered.
The return is part of conducting.
It is not a one-time shift
You do not become a conductor once and remain there forever.
Passenger and conductor are positions of awareness.
You may be deeply present while making breakfast and disappear into a story ten minutes later.
You may catch yourself halfway through an argument.
You may notice after twenty minutes.
Then after five.
Then after thirty seconds.
Sometimes you may eventually feel the turn beginning before you make it.
This is not a promotion from one kind of person into another.
It is a growing ability to notice:
Where am I receiving from right now?
The beginning of choice
When you can separate what is actually being received from what the mind has made out of it, choice becomes wider.
Instead of immediately asking:
What does this mean?
you can first ask:
What is actually here?
Then:
What is my body telling me?
Then:
What have I made out of what is here?
And only then:
What is next?
The mind is no longer removed from the train.
It simply stops pretending to be the entire railway system. 😂
Where to go from here
If you cannot clearly feel the instrument yet
Start with From Passenger to Conductor — Learn the Instrument.
The stations teach you to turn attention toward yourself, stay, recognize bodily information and begin responding to what you receive.
If you can receive the signal but want to learn how to choose from it
Go to Steering.
The Steering practice teaches you how to recognize direct experience, separate it from interpretation, catch yourself when attention changes tracks, return to the current and take the next real step.
Passenger or conductor is not a judgment about who you are.
It is a question you can ask in any moment:
Where am I receiving from now?
